Sophia Thagouras

Sophia Thagouras a longtime Stamford resident died peacefully on Monday, October 14 at the age of 100 she was at home surrounded by her loving family. Sophia was born in Pardali, Greece in 1924, daughter of the late Christos Screpetis and Antigoni Bakes Screpetis.
Sophia moved to the US in 1951 and returned to Greece to marry her beloved late husband Phillip Thagouras in 1955. They moved to Stamford, Connecticut in 1956 where she worked as a seamstress at Yale and Towne for many years. After having three children she went to work at Baldwin Gegenheimer until she retired at the age of 67. She was a long-standing member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox church in Stamford Connecticut.
Sofia is survived by her three loving children, Voula Capomolla, Toni Starson and her husband Joseph, Sotirios “Steve” Thagouras and his fiancée Brenda, all of Stamford; brother Panagiotis Screpetis of Greece; and sisters Helen Papadogiannis of Higganum, Connecticut, and Libby Athanasoulias of Stamford; five loving grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family. In addition to her parents Sofia was predeceased by sisters Jenny Harakas and Yiorgia Psichopaidas, and granddaughter Meghann Starson.
In loving memory of our matriarch, whose kindness and strength will forever inspire us, her legacy of love will live on in the hearts of her family and everyone whose life she touched. She will be forever missed.
A funeral service for Sophia will take place at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 1230 Newfield Ave., Stamford, CT 06905 on Thursday, October 17, 2024. Visitation hours will be held prior from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Interment will immediately follow at Queen of Peace Cemetery in Stamford.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Sophia‘s memory to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Stamford, Connecticut.
