Agnes M. McMorris, 82, of Stamford passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving famiy on Saturday, November 21, 2015. She was born in New York City on November 8, 1933 to the late Patrick J. and Agnes McElroy McKenna.
Sis, to her family, and Ag or Aggie to her many friends, was a city girl, being born and raised in Manhattan and the Bronx. In 1967, Agnes made the big move to the suburbs of Stamford, where she quickly acquired many friends. In her youth, she spent many summers with family in Rockaway, where she met her beloved husband Billy. The tradition continued with annual family visits to the Irish Riviera, before they invested in their first of two homes in the Hamptons. Although no fan of the beach, Mom loved spending time with her family there. After dedicating herself to raising her children, she resumed her education, earning a college degree as a Registered Nurse in 1977. She loved to serve those in need, and worked for many years at the Homestead Nursing Home in Stamford. For the last twenty plus years of her career, she served as the receptionist at the UConn Stamford Branch, retiring a week shy of her 80th birthday.
In her all too brief and well-earned retirement, Agnes filled her time continuing her love affairs with travel and with tag and estate sales, battling the contestants on Jeopardy! and looking for ideas from the many programs she loved on the HG network. She especially loved to travel in the company of her siblings and cousins. Her biggest regret was that she was not able to host her friends this summer at their annual visit to her Hamptons’ house.
Family was most important to Mom, hosting epic Thanksgiving dinners for her extended family. There wasn’t a family wedding that went by that she didn’t remark on how beautiful and lovely they were, and how great it was to see all of her relatives. Aggie was an elegant dresser, always one of the most stylish people at any affair. She was a voracious reader, with eclectic tastes running from mysteries to her New York Post, and everything in between.
Agnes was fiercely independent, and a fighter right to the end, bravely facing her third battle with cancer with courage and grace.
Agnes is survived by her loving children, Donald McMorris and his wife Carol of Doylestown, PA, William McMorris and his wife Carol of Wilton, David McMorris and his wife Maria of Trumbull and Peter McMorris and his wife Melissa of Horsham, PA, as well as sixteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren, five siblings, Daniel McKenna, Bernadette Askin, Kathleen Buckley, Judy Carlsson and Patricia Baker as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends .
Besides her parents, Agnes was predeased by her husband of forty five years William J. McMorris in 2003, a granddaughter Mary Elizabeth McMorris and three brothers James, Eugene and Donald McKenna.
A funeral procession will be leaving the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at 9:00 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 AM at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 403 Scofieldtown Road, Stamford.
