Alfred “Fred” DiSilvio, 91, of Stamford passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, June 18, 2015. He was born in the Bronx, NY on January 26, 1924 to the late Michele and Filomena Matteo DiSilvio.
Fred was co-owner of Al & Nick Auto Body Shop in the Bronx with his brother Nick for many years, then went on to become an Insurance Adjuster for Nationwide Insurance Co. for thirty years before his retirement. He was a WW II veteran in the US Army and also a member of the VFW, Springdale Post 9617 and was also a member of the New Canaan Radio Control Society. He was a master builder and expert flyer of remote control airplanes for over twenty five years. He was always willing to help new flyers get started in the hobby and served as a flight instructor for the club. He always helped others to rebuild and repair their crashed planes. Fred was extremely proud of his grandchildren and was a devoted husband and loving father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Fred is survived by his loving daughter Debbie Swenson and her husband Gary of Darien, his loving son Robert M. DiSilvio and his wife Maria of Kirkland, WA, four grandchildren Christine DiSilvio, Jamie MacFarland and her husband Matt, Heather Zambarda and her husband Mark, Danielle DeVore and her husband Aaron, as well as four great grandchildren Michael and Annalie MacFarland, Gabriel Zambarda and Hunter DeVore.
Besides his parents, Fred was predeceased by his wife Charlotte Mary Calabrese DiSilvio in 2010 and also nine siblings.
A funeral procession will be leaving the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford on Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at 9:50 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:30 AM at St. Thomas More RC Church, 374 Middlesex Road, Darien. Interment will follow at Putnam Cemetery, Greenwich. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, June 22, 2015 from 4:00-8:00 PM.
