Allan (Mitch) A. Mitchell, 80, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at Stamford Hospital with his wife by his side. Born May 6, 1930 in Stamford, CT, he was the son of the late John and Margaret Robinson Mitchell.

Mr. Mitchell attended Stamford Schools, then enlisted in the US Army in 1947 and served for 23 years, retiring in 1970. He saw combat action in Korea with the 17th Infantry Regt. in 1951 and in Vietnam with the 41st Signal Battalion in 1968. Mr. Mitchell served with Nike Hercules Missile Battalion in Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Fairbanks, Alaska. He also did two tours as an Instructor at the Army Engineer School at Fort Belvoir, VA. Other assignments included Fort Devens, MA; Fort Bliss, TX and White Sands Missile Range, NM. He was very proud to have been able to serve his country with honor and fidelity.

Mr. Mitchells Decorations include; Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, 2 awards of the Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), 2 awards of the National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal with 5 Battle Stars, Vietnam Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, and the Presidential Meritorious Unit Citation.

He was a Life Member of Springdale Post 9617 VFW, Association of the United States Army, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Military Officers Association of America, National Association of Uniformed Services and the American Military Retirees Association.

After retirement from the US Army he worked for the US Postal Service in Darien and New Canaan for 12 years. However, he was best known for his enthusiastic and friendly ways as delivering beautiful floral arrangements for any occasion as an employee of Springdale Florist and Greenhouses from 1991 to present. Allan’s favorite pastime was completing the daily crossword puzzle in pen, as well as watching baseball and football.

He is survived by his wife Josephine Chudy Mitchell of Darien, his sister Patricia Mason of Colorado and several nieces and nephews.

Allan was predeceased by his daughter Suzanna Mitchell Donovan and her husband Daniel and 3 grandchildren, as well as his sister, Clare Elliot and brothers, John and James Mitchell.

Friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902 on Monday, January 3, 2011 from 3:00-7:00PM. A funeral procession will be leaving the funeral home on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 9:10AM for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00AM at St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, 374 Middlesex Road, Darien. Interment will follow at St. John Cemetery, Darien, CT.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made in Allan’s name to Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 120, 357 Main Street, Hartford, CT 06106.
