Anita Louise “Dewie” Mercede, 87, of Stamford passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, May 28, 2015. She was born in Yonkers, NY on March 29, 1928 to the late Joseph and Julia Straub Wallace.
Anita, best known as Dewie, graduated from Stamford High School in 1946 and was a life-long resident of Stamford. She married Nicholas J. Mercede in June of 1949 and started her family.
Dewie was an avid cook and looked forward to entertaining friends and family – either poolside cookouts in the summer or Sunday pasta dinners in the winter months. Holidays were always celebrated around her large dining room table with guests dropping in for dessert. She loved cruising around the Caribbean on a sailboat named after her and spending time in Vermont with her children and grandchildren.
She volunteered for many years at the former St. Joseph’s Hospital where she could be found in the kitchen whipping up her special grilled cheese sandwiches. She enjoyed any kind of craft project, crossword puzzles and drawing. A dog or two were always part of the household - she especially loved her collies and bearded collies, most recently Toby, who was always by her side.
Anita is survived by her devoted husband, Nicholas J. Mercede, her loving children, Frank J. Mercede and his wife Lori, Barbara Pierce and her husband Joseph, her grandchildren, Heather Giannone and her husband Peter, Kathryn Mehok and her husband Michael, Lauren Sailor and her husband Danny, Ryan Pierce and his wife Christina, R.J. Mercede, Kelly Pierce, Nicola Mercede and Jaclyn Mercede, as well as her great grandchildren, Imogen Pierce and Bradley Mehok, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Anita was predeceased by her brother Henry Wallace and her sister Carol Lovello.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 1, 2015 at 10:30 AM at St. Leo’s Parish, 24 Roxbury Road, Stamford. Interment will follow at Long Ridge Union Cemetery, Erskine Road, Stamford. Family and friends may call at the Nicholas F.
