Anna Delio Stamatin, 74 of Stamford, passed away on Sunday, July 11, 2010 at Richard L. Rosenthal Hospice in Stamford. Born on September 4, 1935 in New Canaan, she was the daughter of the late George and Antoinette Delio.

Ann graduated from New Canaan High School in 1953 where she was awarded with two Commencement Awards; Achievement in Cooking and Outstanding Female Athlete. She then attended Norwalk Community College and graduated in 1979 with an Associate of Science Degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies. She was honored as a member of Who’s Who in American Junior Colleges in 1979.

Ann was a Commissioner for the State of Connecticut Bail Commission for 27 years before retiring. She was also a co-owner and operator of Tad’s Drive Inn in Stamford from 1961-1976. She worked for the City of Stamford’s Recreation Department in various capacities including Recreation Maintenance Supervisor, Youth Center Director, Playground Supervisor and Recreation Leader.

Ann enjoyed participating in archery and ping pong, of which she was a tournament winner. She also greatly enjoyed bowling, consistently achieving High Scorer, Average and Overall Bowler for various leagues, and was the President of the City of Stamford Bowling League. She was very active in her community, including being both a Girl Scout Leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother and was P.T.A. Vice President and organizer of many fund raising events for school fairs. She served on Stamford’s Mayor’s Youth Advisory Board and was Campaign Manager for a candidate in a local election.

Ann was also involved with sports her whole life, especially softball and organized the City of Norwalk’s first all girls softball league, then became manager for one of the teams, the Norwalk Bears, for two years. She was one of the original organizers of Stamford’s Miss Softball America Program where she also managed the Stamford Insulation team. Ann took the first All Star team from Stamford to the National Tournament in Texas as Assistant Manager. She managed the All Star team the following year at the National Tournament in Florida, after which she served as League President. She managed a team in the Junior Girls Instruction League for five years, four of which her team was undefeated. She was also the 1980 Manager of Norwalk Community College’s Women’s Softball Team.

Ann also played for Freddie’s Girls of Norwalk for both the basketball and softball teams throughout the 1950’s and played on and organized the New Canaan Blue Jays Women’s Softball Team from 1954-1957. She was a rated basketball referee and softball umpire.

Through her life Ann was the recipient of many awards including; Second Place Stamford Advocate’s Mother of the Year Contest in 1989, New Canaan High School Hall of Fame in 2002, was honored for Athletic Achievement by the New Canaan Old-timer’s Association in 2005.

Ann is survived by her daughter, Donna A. Stamatin of Stamford; her son, Tom Stamatin, Jr. and his wife Laurie of Norwalk; and her canine companion, Remy.

Friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902 on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 from 9:00-11:00AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at St. Aloysius RC Church, 40 Maple Street, New Canaan, CT 06840 at 12:00PM. Interment will follow at St. John’s RC Cemetery, Darien, CT.
