ANTHONY J. CAPONE of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, formerly of Stamford, CT, died peacefully on September 20, 2007 at Norwalk Hospital of cancer. He was 80 years old.


He was born on May 20, 1927 in Brooklyn, New York to the late Girolamo and Josephine Capone who immigrated to the Unites States from Milazzo, Sicily. He is survived by his son, Chris Capone and his wife, Lisa of Stamford; and a daughter, Andrea Russo and her husband, Mark; and their children, Lauren of New York City; and Eric of Weston; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Tim Capone; and his brother, Frank Capone; and sister, Antoinette Capone.

Tony graduated from New Utrecht High School and joined the Navy. He served on the USS Luzon in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Throughout the years he continued to attend military functions and USS Luzon reunions throughout the United States. Recently at the Pensacola Florida Naval Base, he was presented with a flag that flew over Iwo Jimo, Japan.

Upon completing his military service, Tony graduated from Pratt Institute in New York and began his career in advertising, design and media with Gray Advertising, BBD&O and McCann Erickson eventually opening up his own company, Capone Advertising and Think, Inc., in Stamford, Connecticut. He was also well known for his oil, acrylic, watercolor, ink and pastel paintings and portraits. A maritime artist, he is famous for his realistic paintings of tugs, small crafts and related subjects usually found around rivers, oceans, inland waterways and shorelines. His exhibits included paintings of local scenes, New England scenes and sketches of rolling surfs and open waters he calls �"Oceanscapes.” He was recognized as one of the top 100 portrait painters in the country. He was often referred to as the �"guru of painting” at his T&G Art Center in Florida

He has won awards at the National Portrait Exhibition in Washington, DC, the International Portrait Artists Exhibition in Chicago, IL, the Silver Cup Award of Excellence at the International Maritime Exhibition at the Mystic Maritime Gallery in Mystic, CT, two commissions from the Cunard Lines of the Queen Elizabeth II, the Annapolis Art Gallery, MD, the Dorothy Weber Huber Award at the Art Workshop in New Smyrna Beach, FL and exhibits at both the US Merchant Marine and Coast Guard Academies. He was a member of the Society of Illustrators, NY, the Stamford Art Association of CT, the American Portrait Society of California, the Art Workshop of New Smyrna Beach, FL, the American Society of Maritime Artists and is an official artist of the US Coast Guard.

Having resided in New Smyrna Beach, FL for the past ten years, he captured the interest of many diverse groups and has participated in many local programs. Having been associated with Disney, he has demonstrated his talent as a cartoonist in the Education Career Program for middle school, high school and Stetson University. He has also worked on programs for the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach.

His love of art inspired him to teach techniques to friends, family and most of all to inspire children to fill an empty canvas. He will be greatly missed for his love of life, his sense of humor and his ability to put his brush to canvas and create a work of art.

A memorial celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, October 21, 2007 at Shorehaven Golf Club, 14 Canfield Avenue, Norwalk, Connecticut from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
