Antoinette Gerardi, 89, a lifelong resident of Stamford passed away peacefully on Monday, December 14, 2020 at Stamford Hospital. She was born in Stamford in 1931 to the late Antonio and Carmella Fratturo DePalma. Antoinette grew up in the Springdale area of Stamford and was a lifelong member of St. Cecilia’s Church. She left high school early to help provide for her 8 siblings and later in life went on to get her diploma.
She learned to sew as a young girl (making “bloomers” from burlap flour sacks) and continued her passion for sewing her whole life. Many friends and family members brought her pants to hem or clothing that needed repairs.
As she was raising her family, she was best friends with Theresa Barcello and they saw each other several times a week. While her kids were young, every summer was filled with poolside fun. In her later years, she absolutely loved her sunporch where her sisters would visit often along with her good friend Marion.
Antoinette particularly loved being a grandparent to her five grandchildren: Dr. Nora Gerardi (NYC), Vanessa Gerardi (Colorado), Antonio Gerardi (Stamford), Noelle Aly (Oxford England) and Gabriel Aly (Wilton) and spent every holiday with them. Their hearts are broken for the loss, but they all have a million sweet memories of grammy.
She enjoyed talking on the phone every day with her sister Dina and her sister-in-law Carol. She had a passion for talk radio, news and politics.
Antoinette is survived by her loving children, Anthony D. Gerardi of Stamford, Mary Gerardi Aly of Wilton and Frank V. Gerardi, Jr. of Bridgeport. Also surviving are her sisters, Dina Carella of RI, Jeannie Perna of Stamford, Carmella Raffaele of Monroe, two brothers, Joseph Depalma and his wife Maria and George DePalma and his wife Carol, both of CT, as well as five grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her husband, Frank V. Gerardi, Sr. and three sisters, Tillie Cognetta, Millie Caputo and Marie Sparan.
A graveside service will be celebrated at St. John’s RC Cemetery, Darien at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Silver Source (silversource.org), a local nonprofit that drove her to her doctor’s appointments and dropped off groceries and during the pandemic.
The Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory is honored to assist the Gerardi family with the arrangements.
