Bernard (Bernie) S. Kowalczyk, Jr., age 64, passed away at home on August 5, 2006. He was born on September 14, 1941 in Stamford. Bernard was the son of the late Bernard S. and Aniela (Nellie) Gawel Kowalczyk.
A life long member of Holy Name of Jesus Church, he was head usher at the Saturday 5:00 PM Mass for over 20 years. He was prompt, responsible and dedicated to his church. Bernard was also an avid reader and a world history buff. He amazed everyone with his ability to recall historical events and dates in detail. He was also the family historian providing information on the family tree from previous generations.
Bernard was a Stamford High School graduate and attended Orchard Lakes Seminary in Michigan. He was affiliated with Schawk Incorporated in Glenbrook, until his retirement.
He is survived by his brother, Raymond J. Kowalczyk and his wife Gloria; his nephew, Daniel J. Kowalczyk; and niece, Christina Kowalczyk-Loy and her husband Brett. He is also survived by his Uncle Leo Rogowski of Darien; and his Aunt Lottie Chnowski of Stamford. In addition he also leaves many dear cousins. He had a gentle quiet nature and will be missed by his family and friends.
The family will receive friends at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, on Wednesday morning, August 9, 2006, from 9:00 10:30 AM. A funeral procession will then leave the funeral home at 10:30 AM and proceed to Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, Washington Blvd, Stamford, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at St. Johns Cemetery, Darien, CT.
