Bessie V. Pappas entered into eternal rest and peace on July 9, 2015 after spending the evening with her beloved family. She was born on May 29, 1923 to the late Gus Varunes and Frances David. She spent many years living at 294 Shippan Avenue and her memories there were cherished (and frequently retold). She attended local schools, graduating from Stamford High in 1941 and going on to Katherine Gibbs. She worked as a secretary in a variety of settings until she retired at the age of 82. Her work ethic was impeccable and she always enjoyed the comradery of her co-workers.
She married Rudolph J. Pappas on February 5, 1949 and was a devoted wife for almost 50 years. She and Rudy raised two children and they always knew that there was nothing their mother wouldn't do for them. She was a faithful and active member of the Church of the Archangels for most of her life, serving as choir director and secretary of the Philoptochos Society. In addition to her immediate family, she treasured her siblings and took pride in her part in helping to raise them. She set an example for all about grace under pressure and loyalty.
When her health became compromised, she moved to Middletown so that her daughter could give her the help she deserved. She made a host of new friends but her heart remained in Stamford.
She is survived by her daughter, Melissa DiVito and her husband Kenneth of Durham,CT and her son Christopher and his wife Kathy of Westport. She has four adored grandchildren: Matthew DiVito and his wife Tamar, Samantha DiVito and her husband Russell Messina, Katrina Pappas, and Christopher Madden. She was lucky enough to enjoy her great-granddaughter, Natia DiVito. She is also survived by her sister Lorraine Greco and her favorite brother-in-law, Lou as well as her sister-in-law Barbara Varunes and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and godchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, beloved brothers George and John, nephew Tommy, much-admired Aunt Mary, and best friend Estelle Moulketis.
Never was anyone so worthy of the words "Rest in Peace".
