Charles A. Mazzella, Sr., 90 of Stamford, passed away at Richard L. Rosenthal Hospice Residence on Sunday, May 9, 2010. Born on November 16, 1919 in Richwood, West Virginia, he was raised in New Canaan, Connecticut by his parents, Thomas and Mary Rossi Mazzella.
Charlie was part of “The Greatest Generation”, having enlisted in WWII, playing a major role in the D. Day invasion as a medic, when he was captured in SE Low, France and was a POW until V. Day.
To further show that he was a True American Hero, he re-enlisted for the Korean War, became a Master Sergeant, and was stationed in Germany.
Charlie was a member of Hubbard Heights Association and was a past president of Hubbard Heights Mens Club from 1980-1984. He was an avid golfer. He resided in Stamford until he moved to Sebastian, Florida with his lovely wife, Vincenza in 1986.
Charlie was the family Patriarch, devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather and the family Icon.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Vincenza (Ginsey) Ofiero Mazzella of Stamford; his children, Cynthia DeAngelis and her husband Ronald of Stamford, Charles (Chuck) Mazzella, Jr. and Nancie Risola of Coco Beach, FL, and Elaine Palmero and her husband Rich of Stamford; his granddaughter, Melissa Tesei and her husband Steve of Greenwich; his grandsons, Michael J. Sabino, Jr and RJ DeAngelis, both of Stamford; a great grandson, Luke Tesei; two sisters, Sandra DeAsi and he husband Emilio of New Canaan and Anna Cook and her husband Robert of Wisconsin; one brother, Fred Mazzella and his wife Jan of Florida; sister-in-law, Nancy Mazzella of Norwalk; and brother-in-law, Nick Chamulak of New Canaan.
Many nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents, Charlie was predeceased by his two brothers, Andrew and Sylvester Mazzella, and two sisters, Carmella Warzinski and Rose Chamulak.
A Funeral Procession will leave the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT at 10:00AM on Thursday, May 13, 2010 for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:30AM at St. Mary RC Church, 566 Elm Street, Stamford. Entombment will follow at St. John’s RC Cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 from 4:00-8:00PM.
