Donald F. Smith, 87, a lifelong resident of Stamford passed away on Thursday, January 31, 2013 surrounded by his loving family at Stamford Hospital. He was born on November 21, 1925 in Stamford to the late B. Frederick and Florence Schaefer Smith.
Donald was a graduate of Stamford High School, Class of 1944. He was a proud veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S Army Air Corps from 1944-1946 as a Corporal. He was a Stamford Firefighter for thirty years at the Westside Firehouse and drove the Local #3 Engine for the City of Stamford. Donald also was a member of the Springdale VFW Post #9617 and a member of St. Maurice RC Church since 1949 and was also an usher for a number of years. He was a former member of the Stamford AARP.
Donald is survived by his loving sons, Gerald F. Smith, Donald K. Smith, Thomas B. Smith and his wife Marielle all of Stamford. A brother Walter Smith and his companion Doris of Stamford,including three loving grandchildren Dennis F. Smith, Rebecca A. Smith, Sean T. Smith, a great grandson Matt Smith and Don’s close friend Madaline Bolander.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his devoted wife Dorothy Hartnett Smith.
A funeral procession will be leaving The Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902 on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at 9:20 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 AM at St. Maurice RC Church, 358 Glenbrook Road, Stamford. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery with full military honors. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 from 3:00-7:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Donald’s memory to the VFW Post #9617, P.O Box 4712, Stamford, CT 06907.
