Edwin Frank Gutt of New Canaan, CT, died Monday, July 28, 2008 at Norwalk Hospital. He would have been 83 on August 23. He was born to the late Stephen and Valentine Gutt in Cleveland, Ohio in 1925. At nineteen, Ed joined the Army Air Corps in early 1944 making him a WWII Vet. After the war ended, he got his Bachelors degree in Business Management at Ohio University. He then rejoined the Air Force in 1949. He became an Air Force Pilot and flew for the Military Air Force Command. He got his Masters Degree in Business Management at the University of Colorado in 1960 while he continued his Air Force Career. He served for 23 years.
He married Ruth Ann Baird in 1954, his sweetheart, a beautiful air force nurse, whom he had met and fallen in love with in Tripoli, Libya in Africa. The Gutts settled in New Canaan with their five children in 1967 after Ed retired as a Major in the Air Force. He worked as First Officer for a supplemental airline for a short stint before embarking on a new career as Administrative Officer, assistant to the Selectman of the Towne of New Canaan, CT in 1969. He worked for four administrations, under these First Selectmen: Charles Kelly, Henry Noble, Charles Morton and Louis Moreno. Edwin was known to be extremely dedicated and hard working in his position as Administrative Assistant, showing deep concern and commitment to serve and benefit the Towne of New Canaan.
As a husband and father, he was an exemplary model of kindness and truth, dedication and faithfulness, spirit and humor. He would regale us with poems he had written in rhyming couplets and inspired our every gathering with his wit, honesty and his even clarity. He guided us with his appropriateness of response to every situation and taught us in this way how to live.
Since retiring, Edwin maintained his active memberships in the Poinsettia Club, the Senior Mens Club, The Retired Officers Club, and the American Legion. He served as treasurer of Rowayton Art Center, taught computer classes for the Waveny Center and volunteered his civic services for each election. He continued his life-long pursuit of education at Norwalk Community College. He enrolled in a variety of classes, even through this last semester.
He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Ann; his children, Marla Hurtado, Mark and Lisa Gutt, Karen Gutt and Cydney Crogan, Christian Gutt and Tom and Pascale Gutt; and his grandchildren Lilah, Elijah, Valentine and Louise.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, July 31 at 3:00 PM at St. Aloysius RC Church, 40 Maple Street, New Canaan, CT. Interment will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
