Elio D'Elia
July 31, 1939 — August 25, 2012
Elio D’Elia, 73 of Stamford passed away peacefully on August 25, 2012 with his loving family by his side. Elio was born in San Mango Sul Calore, Italy on July 31, 1939 to the late Giuseppe and Generosa D’Elia.
Elio immigrated to America in 1962 after marrying his loving and devoted wife Gerarda and they recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. He loved spending time with his family and especially his five grandchildren whom he adored and who all treasured the endless hours their “Nonno” tirelessly played with them. He meticulously cared for his bountiful vegetable and flower gardens and enjoyed making homemade tomato sauce and wine every season. His meticulousness carried over into his professional life as scores of kitchens and bathrooms throughout Fairfield and Westchester County proudly display his artisanship in working with granite, marble and tile, a trade he began developing as an 11 year old bricklayer's apprentice in Italy. Elio worked at Frank Mercede and Sons for 28 years before launching his own company, Creative Marble Design in 1990.
Elio is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Gerarda Sibilia D’Elia, a daughter Giovanna D’Elia Fox and her husband Andrew of Wilton, a son, Emilio G. D’Elia, a daughter-in-law Rosemary D’Elia of Stamford, a sister Gilda DiNardo of Stamford, and four brothers; Rosario D’Elia and his wife Angela of Stamford, Nicola D’Elia and his wife Adriana of Stamford, Teodoro D’Elia of Southbury and Antonio D’Elia and his wife Clemedina of Italy. Elio is also survived by five grandchildren; Juliana, Michael and Sophia D’Elia and Gerri and Victoria Fox.
Besides his parents Elio is predeceased by his brother Raffaele D’Elia.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the entire 3 South nursing team and aids at Stamford Hospital who always took such wonderful care of their “Poppy.” It was a comforting feeling knowing he was always looked after so well. Thank you also to Dr. Stuart Waldstreicher, Dr. Maher Madhoun, Dr. Joseph Costanzo and Dr. Kevin Miller. And a special thank you to Lauren Forte, RN whose kindness and support at home will forever be remembered.
Friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford on Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:40 on Thursday August 30th, 2012 for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am at Sacred Heart Parish, 37 Schuyler Avenue, Stamford. Interment will follow at the family’s mausoleum at Queen of Peace Cemetery, Stamford.
