Evelyn Gubbins, 96, passed away peacefully at her home in Stamford CT on November 8, 2025. Evelyn was born on January 27, 1929 in Queens, NY.
She is predeceased by her husband Patrick Gubbins, whom she met as a teenager. She said it was at the RKO movie theater in Flushing; he thought it was Jan's ice cream shop, a dispute not resolved in 66 years of marriage.
She and her husband hosted many family gatherings that are best described by their grandniece Bridget, who at eight wrote this school essay: “On Thanksgiving, we go to Aunt Evie’s and Uncle Pat’s. Aunt Evie cooks the turkey, and Uncle Pat mixes the drinks.”
Children were her joy and her calling. She taught elementary school in Brookhaven, LI, for nearly 30 years, teaching all grades and ending with her favorite - first grade. She challenged her students with discipline mixed with warmth and got the best out of them. In a district-wide writing contest, hers were the only first graders to enter.
She is survived by her children, Justin Gubbins (Barbara), Patrick Gubbins (Margie), Elaine Gubbins (Warren Luedecker), grandchildren Megan Hari (Pavan), Geary, Patrick (Roseanne) and Kyle (Lindsey Smith) Gubbins, and stepgrands, Andrea (Jason Davis), Justin (Stephanie) and Averell (Rebecca) Luedecker, nine great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and her dearest friend, Ann Marie Haag.
A special thanks to all the wonderful caregivers over the years, especially Fatou, whose bond with mom was filled with love and laughter.
Family and friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT on Saturday, November 15, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM. Interment will be private.
