FRANCIS J. (Frank) KEANEY, a resident of Stamford for over 50 years, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at age 82 after a long illness. Born in Manorhamilton, County Leitrim, Ireland in 1923, he was the son of the late Mary McGuinness Keaney and Hugh Keaney.
He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Peg (Mulrooney) Keaney. Also surviving are his three beloved children and one dear grandson: Frank Keaney, Jr. of Valrico, FL; John Keaney and wife Milca of Stamford and their son Sean Hugh; and his daughter Maura Keaney of Stamford and Falls Church, VA.
One of fourteen children, Frank was predeceased by his brothers Patrick and Philip of Co. Leitrim, Ireland, and his sister Susan McKiernan of Birmingham, England. He is also survived by the most wonderful brothers and sisters a man could ever want - his brother Bernard (Benny) and wife Nora Keaney of Yorktown Heights, NY; a sister, Peggy and her husband Hal Heussner of Manahawkin, NJ, a brother Stephen and wife Kathy of Birmingham, England, sisters Julia Fidgeon, Kitty Keany, and Rita Keaney of Ireland, and brothers Tommy and wife Margaret, Seamus and wife Margaret, Oliver and wife Marie, and John and wife Mary, all of Ireland. He also dearly loved his many dozens of nieces, nephews, cousins, and others in his extended family.
Frank graduated from secondary school at St. Patrick’s College in Co. Cavan, Ireland and immigrated to the United States in 1948. For 11 years after he first arrived in Stamford, he was a milkman for Sealtest Dairy. In the 1960’s, he was co-owner of Dolan and McGuinness Tavern in downtown Stamford. He was later a warehouse manager for Buster Brown Textiles of Stamford and was fortunate to work for Pitney Bowes for 10 years before retirement. He continued to work part until age 81, thoroughly enjoying his decade of work as a doorman in Stamford, first at Regency Towers and then at 1 Strawberry Hill Avenue.
Frank was a longtime active parishioner of St. Maurice Church and served as usher at Sunday Mass for more than 25 years. At one time he was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Knights of Columbus.
The greatest joys in the final years of Frank’s life were going home to Ireland for a month every year, his 80th birthday party, the wedding of his son John to Milca (who he loved like a daughter), the return of his daughter Maura to Stamford to help care for him, and the birth of his only grandchild, Sean Hugh. Sean brought laughter and countless smiles to every day of Frank’s last months.
Frank especially wanted to thank all of the caregivers whose work enabled him to spend his final year in his own home and his last night in his own bed, including all of his doctors and nurses, the dedicated staff at the Stamford Dialysis Center, drivers at the Red Cross, the wonderful staff of Connecticut VNA , Stamford Senior Services, and Senior Nutrition Services. Our family will always be grateful that you gave us so much extra time with him and helped us to keep him comfortable.
Friends are welcome to celebrate his life with us at Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford from 2 to 4PM and 6 to 8PM on Sunday, March 5. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday March 6 at 10:00 AM at St. Maurice Church, 358 Glenbrook Rd. in Stamford. Interment will follow at St. John Cemetery, 25 Camp Avenue, Darien.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in his memory be made to the renovation fund for St. Maurice Church or to Senior Nutrition Services of Catholic Charities of Fairfield County, so that other seniors in Stamford may be cared for with the same kindness that he received.
