George T. Cartsounis, 88, of Stamford passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, August 18, 2015. He was born in Ossining, NY on November 26, 1926 to the late John and Ethel Pappas Cartsounis.
George was a WW II veteran having served in the US Navy on the Auxilary Mine Sweeper USS Staff AM 114. He served in the European and Pacific Theatres, as well as the Invasion of Normandy and was the recipient of four Bronze Stars.
He was employed as an assembly line foreman at Esbeco Distillary of Stamford for twenty five years before retiring. His interests included dancing, walking, oil painting, trips to the casinos, outdoor concerts, crossword and jigsaw puzzles and he was a loyal Giants fan.
George is survived by his loving children, Gary Cartsounis and his wife Eileen, Gail Cartsounis, Barbara Cartsounis and Donna Cartsounis, as well as three granddaughters, Christina Cartsounis, Valerie Cartsounis and Danielle Simpson and her husband James. Also surviving is a brother Harry Cartsounis.
Besides his parents, George was predeceased by his wife Anna Colamonico Cartsounis and his brothers James Cartis and Nicholas Cartsounis.
A funeral procession will be leaving the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford on Friday, August 21, 2015 at 8:50 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:30 AM at Sacred Heart RC Church, 37 Schuyler Avenue, Stamford. Interment will follow at Queen of Peace Cemetery, Rockrimmon Road, Stamford. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, August 20, 2015 from 4:00-8:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in George’s memory to the Visiting Nurse and Hospice of Fairfield County, P.O Box 489, Wilton, CT 06897 or to the Stamford, EMS, 684 Long Ridge Road, Stamford, CT 06902
