George Smith

George T. “Smitty” Smith, 91, of Ft. Myers, FL and formerly of Stamford passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 23, 2016. He was born in Stamford on November 13, 1924 to the late George and Mary Butler Smith.
Smitty was a graduate of Stamford High School, Class of 1942 and a WW II US Navy veteran, having served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. He was a member of the Halloween Yacht Club of Stamford and the Coast Guard Auxillary, as well as one of the founding members of Our Lady Star of the Sea RC Church. He was also a member of Trout Unlimited, American Littoral Society and the NRA. Smitty was employed at Ideal Machines of Stamford for many years before his retirement.
Smitty is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Edgar Smith of FL, his loving daughter Kimberly Ryan and her husband Daniel E. of Yorkville ,Illinois and his grandchildren Kyle ,Kurtis and Carolynn Ryan and a brother Pierce Smith and his wife Donna of NC, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Smitty was predeceased by his brother Thomas Smith and his sister Muriel Carlson.
A funeral procession will be leaving the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at 9:40 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 AM at Our Lady Star of the Sea RC Church, 1200 Shippan Avenue, Stamford. Interment will follow at St. John’s RC Cemetery, Darien. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, August 29, 2016 from 4:00-8:00 PM.
