George B. Harvey, a longtime resident of New Canaan, CT, passed away on July 2, 2026 at Stamford Hospital surrounded by his loving family. George was born in New Haven, CT on April 7, 1931 to the late Burton and Evelyn Harvey. George was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth, "Beth", who passed away on June 29, 2023.

George spent his childhood in Washington, D.C. He attended the University of Bridgeport before obtaining a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1954. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, George moved to Stamford, CT, where he began his distinguished career at Pitney Bowes Inc. George joined St. John's Episcopal Church in Stamford, where he volunteered as the Scoutmaster for the local Boy Scouts of America (Scouting America) troop. He met Beth after bringing her younger brother, Paul, home one evening after a scouting event. George and Beth wed in June 1962 and were happily married for the following 61 years.

George's career at Pitney Bowes spanned nearly 40 years, starting as an accountant in 1957 and rising to President, CEO, and Chairman in 1983 until his retirement in 1996. As CEO, he maintained an open door for all employees, listening to concerns and suggestions, which created a communal environment where all felt respected. George championed increased recruitment of women and underrepresented groups for senior positions within Pitney Bowes, leading to Pitney Bowes being awarded the Catalyst Award in 1994. Among many other honors, George was selected as Business Leader of the Year by the Hartford Courant in 1988 and Business Leader of the Year by Loyola University in 1991. At his retirement, a Chair was endowed in his name at the Wharton School.

In addition to Pitney Bowes, George served on several corporate boards including The McGraw-Hill Companies, Pfizer Inc., Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc., Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Co., Northeast Utilities, The Norton Company, Mass Mutual Insurance, and Connecticut Bank and Trust.

George was also a leader in the community - he was named Stamford, CT Citizen of the Year in 1996 and was awarded the inaugural Heart of Gold Society Award in 1995. At various times, he served as Chair and member of the Board of Trustees for the Ferguson Library, Chair and director of the Stamford Health System, trustee & director of the United Way of Tri-State, and head of SACIA (Southwestern Area Commerce & Industry Assoc.), where he also won the Excalibur award for working to improve life in lower Fairfield County, CT. George was also a member of the Wharton School's Board of Overseers and a trustee and board president of King School in Stamford, CT.

George enjoyed cooking from his mother's hand-typed cookbook, his annual fly-fishing trip to VT, playing golf, and visiting with his grandchildren. He fondly remembered carrying the Olympic torch for the Summer Olympic Torch Relay in 1996.

George is survived by his sons Paul B. Harvey and his wife Ellen, George P. Harvey and his wife Jana, David B. Harvey and his wife Connie. George is also survived by his loving grandchildren Evelyn, Julia, George, Anna, Peter and Terence.

There will be no calling hours and interment will be held privately at the Long Ridge Union Cemetery in Stamford.
