Gus “Dino” Chagaris, 86, of Stamford, CT, died peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family, on September 15, 2009, after a brief illness.
Dino was born on April 18, 1923 in Agios Petros, Greece to the late George and Eleni Gianukakis Chagaris. He spent his childhood in Pireaus, and during World War II, he moved to Athens where he lived until he immigrated to Stamford in 1951. He worked for Pitney Bowes for 21 years until his retirement in 1988.
Dino was an active member of the Church of the Archangels, including its Seniors Group, and of the Oval Club of Pitney Bowes. He enjoyed traveling, gardening, bowling, and watching sports, especially his Olympiakos F.C. soccer team of Greece and his New York Yankees. However, what he loved most was spending time with his family.
He was the beloved husband of Helen Georgiadis Chagaris, with whom he recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He also leaves behind three children, Connie Begetis and her husband, Dimitris; George Chagaris and his wife, Christine; and Jeanette Chagaris. He was a wonderful grandfather and will be sorely missed by his three grandchildren: Katerina, Eleni, and Stavros Begetis. He is also survived by his loving sister, Katie Karras; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his two brothers, Peter and Jimmy Chagaris; and his sister, Effie Spanakos.
Calling hours will be held at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, on Friday, September 18 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm with a Trisagion at 7:00 pm. A funeral procession will be leaving the funeral home at 9:40 am on Saturday, September 19 and proceed to Church of the Archangels, 1527 Bedford Street, Stamford where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am, officiated by Rev. Dr. Harry Pappas and the Very Rev. George Poulos. Interment will follow at Fairfield Memorial Park Cemetery, Oaklawn Avenue, Stamford.
