On Saturday, November 11, 2006, Dr. Helen Thorworth Williamson died in the company of family, at her home in Stamford, CT. Born in Irvington, NJ, on December 15, 1927, she was the daughter of the late John Andrew and Hazel Sayre (Tichenor) Thorworth, and sister of the late Clifton and David Thorworth.

She was predeceased, in May, by her beloved husband of 58 years, Donald Henry Williamson. Dr. Williamson is survived by five children, Diane Williamson, Danbury; Steven Henry Williamson and wife Nancy, Springfield MA; Nina Williamson Fawcett, Stamford; David Henry Williamson and wife Mary, Plum Island MA; Crane Williamson Cesario and husband Richard, Hatfield MA; and by close nephew Fred Thorworth. She is also survived by grandchildren, Christopher and Ryan Ciuffo; Elisha Williamson Raczkowski and husband Jay; Shanoah Whitman; Kyle Fawcett; Nathan Henry and Rachel Williamson; Michael John and Juliana Beam Cesario; and two great-grandchildren, Jack Henry and Willem Cole Raczkowski. Helen will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by family and friends alike.

Dr. Williamson attended William Smith College where she held a Trustee Scholarship. After graduating from college, Helen and Don settled in Stamford, where they raised their family. Helen was a member of the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church in Stamford, active in the Junior League, on the Board of Trustees of Stamford Hospital, and President of the Stamford Hospital Auxiliary from 1960-1966. Helen continued to pursue her education and earned an MA from Fairfield University in 1965, and her Ph.D. in psychology from New York University in 1971. She was recognized by the Stamford Advocate as an Outstanding Civic Leader in1966, received the Founder’s Day Award from NYU in 1971, was listed in Who’s Who in American Women, and in the National Register of Mental Health Providers in Psychology. In 1976, she was conferred with an honorary Doctorate of Science by Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

Dr. Williamson was a licensed clinical psychologist, practicing psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis at the Lincoln Institute from 1970-72 and in private practice in New York City from 1971 until her retirement in 2004. Dr. Williamson was also an adjunct Professor of Psychology at Manhattanville College. She was the author of Teaching Tolerance for Ambiguity, 1971; and was a member of the APA; NY State Psychological Assn; CT Psychological Assn.; Psychologists in Individual Practice; NY Society for Clinical Psychology; American Academy of Psychotherapists; American Group Psychotherapy Association; and Society for Personality Assessment.

World-wide travelers, Helen and Don circled the globe three times and visited five continents. They took French Immersion courses in Provence, and recently attended advanced seminars in Mind-Body Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Helen and Don celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family in Aruba. The Williamsons were long time patrons of the arts, including Metropolitan Opera, New York Philharmonic, New York City Ballet, Metropolitan Museum of Art, MOMA, Long Wharf Theatre, and Yale Repertory Theatre.
