HELENE M. COPPOLA, 98, of Stamford passed away on Monday, December 7, 2009 at Edgehill in Stamford. Born in New York, New York on October 13, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Masek Hlavaty. She was the wife of the late John C. Coppola, Sr.

Helene’s long life reflected her strength, hard work and determination. She freely offered an opinion on any topic important to her. She was a fierce protector of her family, doting on her children and lavishing much love and attention on her grandchildren and great grands. She happily celebrated special events in their lives from births and baptisms to dance/piano recitals, ball games and weddings. She thoroughly enjoyed her Monday pinochle games with her “senior” friends. Helene was a strong presence in the lives of her family and friends and will be surely missed.

In addition to Helene’s life work as a wonderful daughter, sister, mother and grandmother, she also worked outside the home. She was a presser at Peter Rosa’s Blouse Factory, worked on the assembly line at Norma Fag Bearings and was a part time bookkeeper for several years for Arnold Bakery.

Helene is survived by her daughters, Susanne Saba (John) of Stamford, Diane Fink (Edward) of Madison, WI; a son, John C. Coppola, Jr. (Nancy) of The Villages, FL; her grandchildren, Lisa-Saba Price (Joe), Gregory Saba (Cheryl), David Saba (Stefanie), Matthew Fink (Shandra Petersen), Kristine Prugh (Scott), Kristyn Coppola, and Karyee Rux (Don); and thirteen great grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Jospeh Hlavaty and Godfrey Hlavaty (Blanche); a sister, Emma Soff; sisters in law, Barbara Hlavaty, Jennis Procaccini, Elsa Coppola;and brothers in law, Charles Copley (Sophie) and John Tymon.

In addition to her parents and husband, Helene was preceded in death by her brothers, Edward and Charles Hlavaty and a sister, Mary Masso.

A procession will leave the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT, 06902 on Monday, December 14, 2009 at 10:35 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Bridget’s of Ireland RC Church, 278 Strawberry Hill Avenue, Stamford, at 11:00AM. Interment will be Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at St. John’s Cemetery in Darien at 11:00AM. Friends may call at the Funeral Home on Sunday, December 13, 2009 from 1:00-5:00PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in the name of Helene M. Coppola to a charity of one’s choice.
