Ilario Altamura

Ilario Altamura, 87, passed away peacefully September 11, 2016 while surrounded by family. Born on September 18, 1928 in Ariola, Gerocarne, (Italy) to Raffaele and Stella Ierace Altamura, he was the fourth born of eight children. He has been a resident of Stamford, CT for the past 46 years with his loving wife of 62 years, Michelina.
Ilario is commemorated for his ingegnosità (creativity), clever and brave character as he moved from Italy to America in 1972 to build a prosperous future for his family. He founded Altamura Landscaping, which has evolved into many local family businesses. Here in America he and his wife have raised five children together in Stamford, CT. Ilario's passion for gardening, soppressata, wine-making, along with setting strong family values and traditions which will be carried down for many more generations to come. He enjoyed story-telling of his Italian experiences and folktales to his grandchildren, and enjoyed company sharing his wine and soppressata.
Ilario is survived by his loving wife Michelina Tarzia Altamura, sister Caterina Valenzisi,brothers Domenico and Rocco Altamura; children Ralph and his wife Phyllis Altamura, Joseph and his wife Lina Altamura, Stella Grazia and her husband Domenico Schinella, Michael and his wife Esther Altamura, Sofia Altamura and her husband PJ Glynn; 15 grandchildren Joseph, Ilario, Maryann, Ilario, Luigi, Michael, Michael B., Grace, Michelle, Eric, Daniel, Austin, Nicholas, Nora, and Katherine as well as four great-grandchildren Ava, Gianna, RJ, Domenico.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brothers Michele, Giuseppe, Tommaso, and Vincenzo Altamura.
A funeral procession will be leaving the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at 10:30 AM and proceed to Church of St. Cecilia, 1184 Newfield Avenue, Stamford for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:30AM. Interment will follow at Queen of Peace Cemetery, Rockrimmon Road, Stamford. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 from 3:00-8:00 PM.
