J. Stewart Thorne – a Shippan Point resident for 53 years, an animal lover, golf enthusiast and music devotee, died November 28 following a long illness. He was 93. Mr. Thorne, known as Stew, was born March 17, 1913 in New York City, son of the late Dr. Victor Corse Thorne and Claire McCullough Thorne.

Mr. Thorne was educated at the Harvey School in Katonah, NY and at Phillips Andover Academy, Andover, MA. He graduated from Yale University, Class of 1938, and served in the US Army during World War II. Among his many interests were financial market management, bowling and golf, which he played avidly and well until his later years. He and his wife, Anne McManus Thorne, have been longtime members of Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, NY. Mr. Thorne often referred to the golf courses at Winged Foot as his �"favorite place on earth”. He and Mrs. Thorne have also been members of the Stamford Yacht Club for more than 50 years. In addition, Mr. Thorne was also a member of the Yale Club of New York City. He was known by friends and neighbors as an animal lover who was also a rehabilitator of abandoned or injured birds and animals, many of which he tended in his home before releasing them or turning them over to the proper agencies.

In addition to his other interests, Mr. Thorne had a passionate and long-standing interest in the piano and in music, and in the 1970’s, he founded a music publishing concern, The Basset Music Company. Mr. Thorne was also one of the founding parishioners of Our Lady Star of the Sea RC Church, when that parish was established in 1964.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Anne Thorne; a son, Dr. Mark Thorne of Clemmons, NC; two daughters, Joan Thorne Early of Wyckoff, NJ; and Suzanne Thorne Coomaraswamy of Austin, TX. Also surviving are two children by a previous marriage, a son, J. Stewart Thorne, Jr. of Old Greenwich; and a daughter, Victoria Thorne Lee also of Old Greenwich; and seven grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 9, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady Star of the Sea RC Church, 1170 Shippan Avenue, Stamford. Interment will be private.
