Jean (Blackie) Mattimore passed away in her sleep early on the morning of April 14. She was 88 years old and had been suffering the last few years with a variety of heart and lung ailments.

Blackie grew up in Portsmouth, Ohio and is survived by an older sister, Maryanne; her three children, Pat (Jean), Bryan (Hazelann), and Karen O’Brien (Mike); and five grandchildren, Liza, Willie, Cathryn, Caroline and James.

Blackie graduated from Ohio State University and served as a second lieutenant in the Navy during World War II, working as a code breaker. She met her husband, J. Clarke "Matti” Mattimore shortly before the end of the War and they were married in 1946. They lived in New York City until 1955 and moved to Shippan Point the next year. Matti, Vice President with Time, Inc. died in 1975.

Blackie liked to play tennis, bridge and golf, and though not an avid cook, co-authored the cookbook, "Cooking by the Clock”, with Matti. The book enjoyed modest success and was subsequently released in paperback.

For fifty years, Blackie was a member of the Stamford Yacht Club, and she was active in the Shippan Point Garden Club holding a variety of elective positions with that organization. For many years, Blackie worked as a Welcome Wagon Hostess for Welcome Wagon International.

Blackie was also one of the founding members of the infamous SYC "Cadillac Club”, a weekly gathering of dear friends. Blackie was a beautiful, fun-loving person and will be missed greatly.
