Joan Kingman Grayson, 94, of Greenwich, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on November 28, 2012 at Greenwich Woods Health Care Center, Greenwich, CT. Joan was born in Mount Vernon, NY to the late Irving and Maude Sackett Deming Walz. Joan was a graduate of Greenwich High School, Class of 1936 and graduated from The Greenwich Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1942. She served in the United States Army Nurse Corps in the South Pacific Theater during World War II from 1943 to 1944. After the war Joan became a surveyor for the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health Care Organizations. She was the first Executive Director of a hospice in Sarasota, FL and the Executive Director of Happiness House Rehab Center, also in Sarasota where she lived for 25 years. Besides her career in nursing, Joan was also an Award Winning Photographer.
Joan is survived by her daughter Deidra “Dee” Saffery, of Stamford, and her granddaughter Jennifer Margaret Bartley and her husband Adam, of South Salem, NY. One niece and two nephews also survive.
Besides her parents, Joan is predeceased by her step-father Edgar A. Walz Jr., her two brothers, Robert Lytle Deming and Edgar A. Walz III, her sister Natalie Walz Fullerton, her sister in law Peggy Beecher of Stamford and a niece Lydia Walz.
A memorial service will be celebrated at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 200 Riverside Ave., Riverside, CT on Saturday December 15, 2012 at 11:00AM. A private internment will take place at the First Congregational Church, 108 Sound Beach Ave., Old Greenwich, CT.
