John William Banks, age 94, passed away on Monday, November 7th at Stamford Hospital after a brief illness. Born June 15, 1922 in Norwalk, he was the son of the late Norman J. Banks and Bertha Divine Banks.
John was a graduate of Norwalk High School and attended Grinnell College and Booth and Baylis Business School. He served as a Master Sergeant in the Army Air Corps in North Africa during World War II.
John was employed for 42 years by Burroughs/Unisys Corporation as a Field Engineering Manager, retiring in 1984. After retirement he worked part time at Sterling Farms Golf Course for several years. John served as Vice President and Treasurer of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Stamford and was a member of the American Legion Post 200 CT. He was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of Stamford.
John was an avid golfer and expert woodworker. He was a country music fan and enjoyed watching the Mets, the Giants, the Rangers and auto racing. He was blessed to have been able to live in his home without aid until his passing.
John was predeceased by his wife, Edna Burtis Banks. He is survived by his two daughters, Patricia L. Panilaitis and her husband Leo of Watertown, CT; and Susan B. Keith and her husband Richard of Stamford; a sister Eleanor Banks Weigle and husband George of Westport, six nieces and one nephew. He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Matthew, Kevin and Elizabeth Panilaitis, as well as long-time friend Helen Keeley.
A service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Stamford on Saturday, November 12th at noon, followed by a burial at Fairfield Memorial Park Cemetery on Oaklawn Avenue. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Edna Banks Care Group, c/o First United Methodist Church, 42 Cross Road, Stamford, CT, 06905.
