John C. Karukas, a former teacher and assistant principal in Stamford Public Schools, passed away on Thursday, April 12, 2007 at the Richard Rosenthal Hospice Residence. Born in Stamford on February 6, 1941, he was the beloved son of Mary Davelis Karukas of Stamford and the late Costa N. Karukas. The cause was lung cancer.
John received a B.S. degree from Central Connecticut State College and an M.S. degree from the College of Education at the University of Bridgeport. He attended King School and graduated from Stamford High School.
He was an assistant director for his fathers Camp-A-Day at King School and was a counselor for his church at the Ionian Village Summer Camp in Bartholomio, Greece for Greek-American children. He was a lifelong member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Archangels.
John was an avid sportsman playing college and high school football. He was also an active racquetball player and until recently enjoyed swimming at the beach and working out at the gym.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his devoted brother, Nicholas C. Karukas and his wife Mary of Stamford; his sisters, Estelle Keast and her husband David of Carlisle, MA; and Marguerite Lake and her husband Elias of Wethersfield. His eight loving nieces and nephews; fifteen great nieces and nephews; caring and adored cousins; as well many long-standing, loyal, supportive and very special friends, also survive.
His family will receive family and friends at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, on Monday, April 16, 2007 from 4:00 8:00 PM. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM. A funeral service will be at the Church of the Archangels, 1527 Bedford Street, Stamford on Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at 11:30 AM. The Very Reverend George Poulos, along with Johns cousin the Reverend James Moulketis of Wyckoff, NJ will officiate. Interment will follow at the Woodland Cemetery in Stamford.
