John S. Poczabut (Pozy), a retired Stamford physician, passed away on November 21, 2007 at the age of 93. He was born on September 1, 1914 in Pittsford, VT, the son of John and Malvina (Tumielewicz) Poczabut and the eldest of thirteen children. He graduated from Pittsford High School in 1932 and the University of Vermont, with a B.S. degree in 1936. In 1941, he graduated from the University of Vermont, College of Medicine.
From 1941 to 1942 he interned at Stamford Hospital where he met his future wife, Nurse Theia Gray. He was then called into service with the Army Medical Corps. He was first stationed in England and then went on to Africa. He was in the initial invasions of Sicily and Italy and was with the first medical unit on Normandy Beach on D-Day. Pozy was awarded six campaign and arrow battle stars, the Presidential Unit Citation and the government of France awarded him the Croix de Guerre with a Palm. He was discharged as a Major in September of 1945 and started his residency at Stamford Hospital. In July 1946, he started private practice in medicine and surgery. He was the founder of the medical department for Pitney Bowes Inc. and served as the medical director for 28 years.
Dr. Pozy was a member of the American Medical Society, Connecticut Medical Society and the American Academy of Family Physicians. He was the first director of Family Physicians at Stamford Hospital (1968-1976) and President of St. Joseph Medical Center (1966-1969). He was also Director of Family Physicians (1956-1964) at St. Josephs and held many chairman positions of different committees at both medical facilities. He was Secretary and Director of the Connecticut Academy of Family Physicians. He was President of the Alumni of University of Vermont, College of Medicine (1976-1978). He was Director, President and Charter member of the Exchange Club of Stamford. His membership included, the Knights of Columbus, St. Augustine Council #41, Holy Name Athletic Club and parishioner of St. Leos Parish. Dr. Poczabut also was Medical Director of Hartford Electrical Co., Barway Corp., Stamford Motors, Inc., and the American Cystoscopic Makers Inc. and resigned from the latter in 2001. After 35 years of practice in medicine and surgery, Dr. Pozy retired on January 1, 1981.
He was the recipient of many awards and honors. He received the Appreciation Award from the Exchange Club of Stamford and was presented with the Book of Golden Deeds Award in 1994. The College of Medicine of the University of Vermont, in appreciation for his service to the community and medicine, bestowed upon him the A. Bradley Soul Award in 2000.
During his life he made time for traveling throughout the world and of course his great passion, Fishing. He is survived by his wife, Theia (Billy) of 62 years; and his children, Robert Poczabut and his wife Donna of Burlington, VT; Charlotte Kane and her husband Joseph of Stamford, CT; and Mary Poczabut of Stamford, CT. Also surviving are his five grandchildren, Katelin Poczabut of Burlington, VT; Lt. Bryan Kane of Clarksville, TN; Sara and John Kane of Stamford, CT; and Kara Poczabut of Stamford, CT. He leaves behind his devoted brothers, and sisters, Bernard and Paul of Rutland, VT; Bernet of Knoxville, TN; Vanda Lulek of Pittsford, VT; Gizela Dzikiewicz of Wethersfield, CT; and Anna Disorda of Cambridge, NY. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Steve, Anthony, William, Walter, Helen Columb, and Elizabeth Chrusciel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, November 26 at St. Leo Parish, 24 Roxbury Road, Stamford, CT at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private. There will be no calling hours.
