John Stratoudakis, 82 of Weston, passed away on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at Richard L. Rosenthal Hospice Residence in Stamford. Born on December 16, 1927 in Stamford, he was the son of the late Peter and Mary Hanzakia Stratoudakis.
John was a member of the Church of the Archangels since he was 21 years of age, and was the youngest president elected to the Parish Council. He was given the title of Archon of the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle in 1971 by the late Patriarch of Constantinople Athenagoras for his outstanding services to the Church in America. It is the highest award to be given to a Greek Orthodox Christian layman.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy during WWII having played the drums in the Naval Band during his service. With his love of music, John continued to play for several bands, of which he was best known as the drummer for “The Contrasts”, playing in the greater Stamford area. He was also Superintendant of Buildings and Grounds for the City of Stamford for 33 years before retiring in 1996.
John is survived by his wife, Susan Holko Stratoudakis of Weston; his niece, Mary Judge of Stamford; his four nephews, Peter Voulgarakis of Weston, James Voulgarakis of Wilton, George Kokolis of Cape Coral, FL and James Stratoudakis of Virginia; and several other nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his children, Jack and Karen Stratoudakis; his three brothers, James, George and Michael Stratoudakis; and his two sisters, Patricia Kokolis and Bertha Voulgarakis.
A funeral service will be celebrated at 10:30AM on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at the Church of the Archangels, 1527 Bedford Street, Stamford. Interment will follow at Fairfield Memorial Park, Oaklawn Avenue, Stamford. Friends may call at the Church on Friday, May 21, 2010 from 4:00-8:00PM with memorial prayers to be said at 7:00PM. The Rev. George Poulos will be officiating.
