John P. Vakos, 89, of Stamford, passed away peacefully on Thursday August 11, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. John was born in Ware, MA on July 11, 1927 to the late Paul and Bessie Vakos.
John worked as a Custodian with the Stamford Board of Education for thirty-two years before retiring. He was an avid New York Yankees and New York Giants fan. He was also an US Army veteran, having served in the Korean War.
John is survived by his loving wife Toula Vakos of Stamford, and his children, Paul Vakos and his wife Patricia of Hamden, CT, Maria Fraser of Warwick, RI, Vasso Pierne and her husband Edward of Hamden, CT and Georgia Grasso and her husband Paul of New Fairfield, CT, his brother George Vakos of Stamford, CT, as well as his nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, John is predeceased by his three brothers; Harry Vakos, Angelo Vakos and Jimmy Vakos.
A funeral procession will leave the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT on Tuesday August 16, 2016 at 10:20AM and proceed to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 1230 Newfield Avenue, Stamford, CT for a funeral service to be held at 11:00AM. Interment will follow at Fairfield Memorial Park Cemetery, Oaklawn Avenue, Stamford. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday August 15, 2016 from 4:00 to 8:00PM, with a Trisagion Service to be held at 7:00PM.
