John P. Woodtke Sr., 96, formerly of Stamford passed away on September 20, 2009 at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA. Born January 17, 1913 in Stamford, he was the son of the late Paul J. and Gertrude Wasserlein Woodtke.
John was a retired Postal Clerk having worked for the US Postal Service for twenty years. In addition he was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Stamford and the Grace Lutheran Church of W. Springfield, MA.
He also served in the National Guard in World War II and spent many happy years at the Quail Run Retirement Community in Agawam, MA. John was also an avid fan of the Red Sox and the New England Patriots.
A devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he is survived by his son, John P. Woodtke Jr and daughter in law Lucille of Springfield, MA; four grandchildren, Laurie (Tim) Gioielli, Diane Chantre, Janice (David) Pirog all of Springfield and John P. (Kathleen) Woodtke III of Cumming, Ga. Also surviving him is his brother Frank Woodtke of Stamford and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Rose Russo Woodtke in 1997 and four sisters & two brothers.
Friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford, on Friday, September 25 from 4:00 �" 8:00 PM. A funeral procession will be leaving the funeral home at 9:30 AM on Saturday, September 26 and proceed to Zion Lutheran, 132 Glenbrook Rd, Stamford where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, Darien.
