Joseph C. Benevelli, 89, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 2, 2008 at Stamford Hospital. Born October 4, 1918 in Stamford, he was the son of the late Clement and Felicina Conterno Benevelli.

Joe was a Stamford High School graduate and a veteran of WWII having served in the US Army Air Corps as a tail gunner and side gunner, having flown 72 missions. He was a machinist/tool and die maker having worked for Bullard’s, Pitney Bowes, Burndy and Condé Nast and then became a Pepperidge Farm Franchisee. He was a licensed private pilot, a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Augustine Council #41, 4th degree and the head usher for Our Lady Star of the Sea RC Church seen predominantly at the Saturday 5:30 PM Mass. He was also an avid circus fan and golfer.

He is survived by his daughter, Lynn M. Benevelli of Stamford; a son, Richard J. Benevelli and his wife Suzan of Fairfield; and their children, Kyle and Kevin; a sister, Emma Yaeger and her husband Vincent of Saratoga Springs, NY; and a sister-in-law, Margaret McEvoy of Stamford. Numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by the love of his life of fifty-five years, Agnes L. Egan Benevelli; and two brothers, Frank and John Benevelli.

Friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, on Thursday, June 5 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM. A funeral procession will be leaving the funeral home at 9:15 AM on Friday, June 6 and proceed to Our Lady Star of the Sea RC Church, Shippan Avenue, Stamford, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM.
