Joseph L. �"Gigi Colombo, 85, passed away on Monday, October 27, 2008 at Stamford Hospital. Born July 2, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Carrie Pironto Colombo.
Joseph, a former employee of Electrolux, was a cabinet maker for Porta-Door in Stamford for twenty-five years before retiring in 1986. He was a veteran of the US Navy having served in WWII with the 86th Battalion Seabees while stationed in Okinawa, Japan and the Aleutian Islands, AK. Joseph was also a former member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Augustine Council #41. He was a former manager for local baseball teams in Stamford. He enjoyed watching any sporting event, but his passion was always the Yankees. Family was most important to him, no matter what, they always came first. He never missed attending his grandchildrens events and activities.
He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty three years, Dolly Colombo of Stamford; his three loving sons: Joseph N. Colombo and his wife Debbie of Trumbull; Christopher J. Colombo and his wife Toni of Bridgeport; and John R. Colombo of Monroe; and two sisters, Mickey Loglisci and her husband Joseph of Stamford; and Patricia Romanos and her husband Paul of Oxford. Eight grandchildren: Suzanne, Melissa, Michael, Kellie, John, Christopher, Justin, and Steven; one great-grandchild, Alexa; and several nieces and nephews and cousins also survive.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Nicholas J. Colombo; a daughter-in-law, Ava Colombo; two brothers, William and Conrad Colombo; and two sisters, Marie Policastro and Carol Malizia.
Friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, on Thursday, October 30 from 5:00 8:00 PM. A funeral procession will be leaving the funeral home at 9:50 AM on Friday, October 31 and proceed to St. Maurice RC Church, 358 Glenbrook Road, Stamford, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM. Interment will follow at St. John Cemetery in Darien.
