The Rev. Joseph J. Malloy, 71, of Stamford passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and close friends on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at Stamford Hospital. He was born in Stamford on February 21, 1944 to the late Joseph J. Malloy, Sr. and Helen Gladys Bodetka Malloy.
Fr. Malloy attended Holy Name of Jesus and St. Basil’s Prep School before attending the St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, CT in 1964 and St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY in 1966, where he received an A.A. degree and a B.A. degree in Philosophy. While attending Holy Name he belonged to the Boy Scouts of America for nine years attaining Life Rank, and later worked as a Counselor at Camp Toquam in Goshen, CT.
He was ordained on May 9, 1970 at St. Augustine Cathedral in Bridgeport, CT by the Most Reverend Walter W. Curtis, S,T.D. Fr. Malloy’s appointments started at St. James Church in Stratford as an assistant pastor on May 21, 1970, St. Catherine of Siena Church in Trumbull as Parochial Vicar on June 8, 1974, St. Ann Church in Bridgeport on June 12, 1987 as Pastor, and then as Pastor at St. Clement of Rome Church in Stamford from February 1, 2002 until the time of his death.
Fr. Malloy also served as Chaplain in the U.S, Army Reserves, having completed the basic course at Fort Hamilton, NY and he was also appointed Chaplain of the Stratford Eagles Squadron Civil Air Patrol on November 24, 1970 and he also was a member and Chaplain of the Nichols Fire Dept of Trumbull and served with the Bridgeport Fire Dept as Chaplain. He was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Augustine Council #41.
He is survived by his sister Dale Malloy of Stamford, his brother Donald Malloy of Stamford, his sister in law Priscilla Malloy of Stamford, as well as two nieces, three nephews, one grand niece and two grand nephews.
Besides his parents, Fr. Malloy was predeceased by his brother Deacon Wayne Malloy.
Family and friends may call At St. Clement of Rome Church, 535 Fairfield Avenue, Stamford on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 from 4:00-7:00 PM with a Vigil Mass to be celebrated at 7:30 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Clement of Rome on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at St. John’s RC Cemetery, Darien. The Most Reverend Frank J. Caggiano will be officiating. The Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford is handling the arrangements.
