Josephine Hoffkins Herbert, 94, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 3, 2009, in her home. She was born on March 19, 1915, to the late Anton and Mary Janota Kopp.
Josephine was a lifelong resident of Stamford and a graduate of Shorts Secretarial School. She worked for Catholic Family Services as a day care provider and in 1988, received the Community Achievement Award, prior to becoming a self-employed day care provider. In her early years, she was a member of the Pocahontas Society. She was an active member of St. Mary RC Church, a member of St. Mary Rosary Society and the Council of Catholic Women.
Josephine is survived by her three daughters, Marianne Pitts (Jerry) of Ormond Beach, FL, Margaret Hogan (Frank) of Cincinnati, OH, Mary Catherine Herbert of Stamford and a step-daughter, Alice McNamara of Stamford. Eleven grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren also survive.
In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her first husband, John Hoffkins; her second husband Capt. Harold J. Herbert; her brother William Kopp; her stepson, Harold J. Herbert, Jr.; and a grandson, Philip Herbert.
Friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, on Thursday, May 7, 2009, from 4:00 �" 8:00 PM.
A funeral procession will be leaving the funeral home at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 8, 2009 and proceed to St. Mary RC Church, 566 Elm Street, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:30 AM. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, Darien.
