Juan Silvio Serpa, 79 of Stamford, passed away on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 in Stamford. Born on May 12, 1931 in Matanzas, Cuba, he was the son of the late Vincente and Antonia Rivas Serpa.

While in Cuba, Juan served for the Cuban Military in the province of Camaguay. Juan worked for Pitney Bowes for 16 years until retiring in 2002. He also was an entrepreneur, owning the Spanish-American Grocery Store in Stamford for many years, as well as John’s Diner. Juan was well known for his love of baseball, especially for the Yankees. He was also a very proud father and grandfather, teaching all of his grandchildren to say “Serpa #1!”

Juan is survived by his wife, Maria Helena Veira Serpa of Stamford; his children, Magdalene Antoinette Jeffers and her husband Ernie of Stamford, John Vincent Serpa and his wife Paula of Milford, Isabel Vallejo and her husband Roque of New Fairfield, and Yolanda Munevar of Massachusetts; his brother, Damaso Serpa and his wife Pastora of Stamford; nine grandchildren, Nicole, Eric, and Christian Jeffers, Stephanie, Jessica and Amanda Serpa, Sergio, Melissa and Vanessa Vallejo; and three great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Juan is predeceased by his brother, Benigno Serpa.

A funeral procession will be leaving the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, Connecticut 06902, on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at 10:25AM for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:00AM at St. Bridget of Ireland RC Church, 278 Strawberry Hill Avenue, Stamford. Interment will be will private. Friends may call at the Funeral Home on Monday, December 28, 2009 from 4:00-8:00PM.
