Julius C. Japon, Jr. 95, of Newtown and formerly of Darien passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at Danbury Hospital. He was born in Havana, Cuba on July 20, 1919 to the late Julio C. Japon, Sr. and Gloria Japon Elosegui y Piedra.
Julius grew up in New York City where he graduated from George Washington High School. His first job was at Seatrain Lines located in Hoboken, NJ. He developed his love of sailing by going on the container vessels between the ports of Hoboken, Havana, Cuba and New Orleans. He later worked as an architectural draftsman for the Frederick Snare Corporation in Havana, Cuba, where he met his wife. Julius returned to the United States with his wife and daughter in 1961. He started work at HELCO (Hartford Electric Light Company, later Northeast Utilities) in the gas division as a draftsman later becoming a supervisor. He retired from Northeast Utilities in 1984.
Julius was an avid Amateur Radio Operator with the call sign WA1SPK, even with Alzheimer’s, he could still remember Morse Code. He also enjoyed going on cruises, spending time with his family, painting and model ship building.
He is survived by his daughter Maria Elena Konitshek and her husband Ronald Edward of Newtown, his granddaughter Heather Orawsky and her husband Michael Jr. of Newtown, his grandson Gary Konitshek of Newtown, two great grandchildren, five year old Victoria and two year old Michael Orawsky III, his sister Gloria Calderon of Miami, FL as well as his nieces and nephews, Michael Lopez-Calderon, Patricia Averhoff, Lucy Lopez-Calderon, Lourdes Montiel, Lissette Kelleher, Carlos Mourin, Jr. and eight great nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Julius was predeceased by his wife of fifty four years, Elena Mourin Japon.
Family and friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford on Thursday, July 2, 2015 from 10:00-11:00 AM with a funeral service following at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, Darien.
