Lambros Elias Siderides, M.D., beloved husband, father and grandfather and devoted physician to three generations of patients in the community, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loved ones on June 7, 2010 after a long illness. He was 82 years old.
Dr. Siderides was born on May 27, 1928 in Constantinople, Turkey to Elias and Marika Siderides. He graduated from the Medical School of the National University of Athens in Greece in 1952 and arrived in the United States on Thanksgiving Day that same year. After a general internship at Christ Hospital in Jersey City, NJ, he continued his residency in Internal Medicine and Non-Invasive Cardiology at St. Michael’s Medical Center in Newark, NJ in 1958. He completed his training at a fellowship in experimental cardiology at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, working under the cardiac surgeon, Dr. Arthur Vineberg, whose team pioneered cardiac bypass surgery. He began his practice in Stamford, CT in Internal Medicine and Non-Invasive Cardiology in 1958. He served as an attending physician at Stamford Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital until March 2008 when he retired from private practice. Upon his retirement, his patients established the Lambros E. Siderides, M.D. Scholarship Fund to benefit medical students at Yale University School of Medicine and University of Connecticut Medical School. He continued to practice cardiology at the Stamford Hospital, interpreting electrocardiograms and stress tests until December 2009. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Physicians. A gifted and dedicated teacher, he was an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, at Yale University School of Medicine, and at New York Medical College; he was also a committed residency instructor at Stamford Hospital. He was a member of the Connecticut State Medical Society and the Fairfield County Medical Association.
Dr. Siderides was a devout member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Archangels, where he was a frequent reader and cantor. He was appointed an Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarch in America, Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle, an honor that was bestowed upon him by his great friend and spiritual father, Archbishop Iakovos of North and South America.
A student and scholar all his life, Dr. Siderides was an insatiable reader of history and political discourse. His other passions included spending time with his grandchildren, sharing his knowledge and his stories, vacationing in Kennebunkport, Maine, sailing, photography, and gardening.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Cleo Siderides, M.D., senior pathologist at Stamford Hospital, his children Marianna Siderides; Elizabeth Siderides Theofanidis and her husband, Stylianos; Elliot Siderides and his wife Margaret; and his grandchildren, Nicholas, Lambros and Alexandra Theofanidis and John, Andrew and Cleo Siderides.
Calling hours will be on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at the Church of the Archangels, 1527 Bedford Street from 4:00-9:00pm with the Trisagion Service at 7:30pm. The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at the Church of the Archangels at 10:00am. The interment will follow directly after the Funeral Service at the Lakeview Cemetery in New Canaan, 362 South Main Street, New Canaan, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Lambros E.
