Laura Pauline Chapple Manby, 87, died at her home in Stamford, CT on August 4, 2007 after a struggle with cancer over the past two years. She had resided in Stamford since 1977 and had previously resided briefly in Denver, Colorado and before that, for many years, in Norwalk, CT.
Mrs. Manby was born in Jackson, Michigan on March 28, 1920. She graduated from Hillsdale College in 1942 and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.
She was an active member of the First Congregational Church on the Green in Norwalk for over fifty years. Mrs. Manby was also active for many years with the Treasure House operated by the Womens Board of Norwalk Hospital. She was an avid reader and loved her books; in Stamford, she was a devoted supporter of the Stamford public Library system, including the effort to preserve the Weed Library branch of the Ferguson Library.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Charles Robert Manby, Sr. who died August 6, 1993. She is survived by two sons, Charles Robert Manby, Jr. of South Royalton, Vermont; and John Thomas Manby and his wife, Katharine Favano Burns, of Norwalk; a daughter, Laura Manby of Fairfield, CT; and four grandchildren, Brian John Manby, Jane Kathleen Manby, Charles Job Manby and Ellen Pauline Manby, who gave her special joy. She was well loved by her good friends for her wit and compassion and her memory will be fondly cherished by all of them.
