Leonard Anthony Ammaturo
November 7, 1915 — February 25, 2006
Leonard Anthony Ammaturo died of heart failure on Saturday, February 25, 2006, at Stamford Hospital, following surgery. He was 90.
Tony, as his friends and family called him, was born in Rhinebeck, New York in 1915. At the age of 8 he immigrated to Bari, Italy with his parents Anna and Marc Antonio, where he was educated. The family then returned to the United States in 1928 and established a home in the Bronx, NY. Mr. Ammaturo then went to work at age 18 for an auto body repair firm. He subsequently acquired the business, naming it Washington Auto Body, and operating it for 53 years before retiring in 1977. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1943 and served in World War II and was stationed in Panama. He had residences in Pelham, Mahopac, Pawling, NY and more recently had been living with his daughter, Mrs. Patricia Truglia in Stamford, CT.
Leonard was married to Josephine Fava in 1949. He is survived by his four children, Leonard of Avon, CO; Camille of Wingdale, NY; John of Lagrangeville, NY; Patricia of Stamford, CT; and his nine grandchildren, John, Jaclyn, Joseph, Nicholas, Toni-Ann, Sean, Robert, Marisa and Jaclyn. Josephine died in 1972 at the age of 49.
A funeral procession will leave the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, at 9:20 AM on Wednesday March 1, and proceed to St. Marys RC Church, 566 Elm Street, Stamford where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla, NY. Friends may call at the funeral home (TODAY) Tuesday February 28, from 5:00 9:00 PM.
