Louis Joseph Sabini, of Stamford, passed away peacefully with his family by his side, at Richard L. Rosenthal Hospice Residence on April 23, 2008, after a long battle with colon and pancreatic cancer. Born January 8, 1920 in Stamford, he was the son of the late Pellegrino and Maria Sabini.
Lou was the last surviving member of the Sabini family, who took over their fathers family business in 1934 after his death. Along with his sister and four brothers, P. Sabini & Co. became one of the largest furniture and appliance stores in Fairfield County with Louis appointed as treasurer of the business. Originally located at 175 Pacific Street in downtown Stamford, the company relocated to 614 Shippan Avenue after the Urban Renewal Redevelopment plan took effect in the mid-sixties in an effort to modernize the downtown area. The new store, which opened in 1968, was 50,000 square feet and is still considered a landmark today. Sabinis boasted a wide array of furniture, appliances, televisions, stereos, cabinetry, kitchen sinks and all types of flooring, which included carpets, linoleum and tile. Sabinis also had a moving and storage company and were agents to United Van Lines. The stores business thrived nearly 80 years and closed its doors in 1986.
Louis attended Stamford High School, was inducted into the United States Army on April 3, 1942 and served as a medic during WWII. He had two brothers, John and Angelo, also in the service at the same time. He was stationed in India, Pakistan and Persia and was discharged from the military on 1945. He was married the following year on February 18 to Marietta L. Longo. They recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. During many happy years together, they both shared their love of music (particularly Frank Sinatra), dancing, traveling, boating and spending time with their family. Lou was a former member of the Knights of Columbus and was very active in his parish, the Church of the Holy Spirit.
Louis is survived by his loving wife, Marietta Longo Sabini; his daughter, Marilyn Gansel and her husband, Robert Gansel, of Kent, CT; his son, Lou Sabini and his wife, Susan, of Stamford; along with three grandchildren, Dr. Heather K. Gansel, Lauren E. Sabini and Michael L. Sabini, all of Stamford.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Elbina R. Sabini; and four brothers, David Sabini; Joseph Sabini, John Sabini and Angelo Sabini.
