Margaret E. Burkhardt (Betty), 90, of Stamford, passed away peacefully at Stamford Hospital on Sunday October 5, 2014. Margaret was born in Portsmouth, NH, January 1924, to the late Ralph and Margaret Gardner Junkins.
Betty graduated from Portsmouth High School, attended the University of New Hampshire and worked at the Portsmouth Navy Yard during World War II. She met her loving husband, John, while in high school. They fell in love while he was serving in the Navy and married in 1944. They moved to Stamford in 1952. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a loyal friend to many, always remembering with a card any special occasion. Everyone was welcomed into her home as family. Betty was a strong woman of faith and compassion who was always the backbone and historian of the family. She is dearly missed.
Betty is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, John J. Burkhardt Sr.of Stamford, her son Jay Burkhardt and Carol Weisbrot of Stamford, her daughters; Peggy Burkhardt and her husband Joe Golden of Beckley, WV, Mary Nattrass and her husband Brian of Vancouver, BC and Teresa Coperine and her husband John of Stamford. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kristen Clickner and her husband John, Staci Altomare, Dan Coperine and his wife Danielle, Sarah Hund and her husband Michael, Sheila Coperine and Tommy Coperine and her great-grandchildren; Kylee and Sydney Gaitin and Olivia, Drew and Sienna Coperine.
Family and friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT on Friday October 10, 2014 from 4:00 to 7:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday October 11, 2014 at 10:30am at St. Mary’s RC Church, 566 Elm Street, Stamford, CT. Interment will be private.
The family would like to thank her loving caregivers Carrie, Julena, & Donia.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Mary’s R.C. Church, St. Benedict’s R.C. Church or a charity of your choice.
