Margaret Justine Smith died on May 28th at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, where she had recently moved.
Born in Port Chester, New York on December 10, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Mary Louise and William Lockwood. Justine was predeceased by her beloved husband and son, Carlton E. Smith and Carlton William Smith.
She was a graduate of Stamford High School and worked in the State of Connecticut Superior Court Family Relations Division until her retirement in 1978.
Justine was a 70 year member of the Catholic Daughters of America, having held many offices on the local, state and national level. She served on the board of Catholic Charities and was a member of the St. Camillus Auxiliary, the Hibernians and the Columbiettes. Her volunteer work over many years included St. Joseph’s Hospital, St. Camillus, the Soup Kitchen, the American Heart Association and her parish, St. Maurice Church. In addition to her selfless giving of time and effort to the community and her family, Justine found time to fulfill her love of travel, including six trips to her favorite destination, Ireland.
Justine is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marybeth and Robert Bernardo, her cousin and loving caregiver, Mary Louise Flowers, a grandson Carlton W. Smith, Jr., and daughter-in-law Vita Smith. She will be also greatly missed by her “other children”, Kathleen Chase, Kevin Connolly, Peter Connolly, Jennifer Dougherty and their families.
Friends may call at the Nicolas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford on Monday, June 1 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM.
A funeral procession will be leaving the funeral home on Tuesday, May 2 at 9:40 AM and proceed to St. Maurice Church, 358 Glenbrook Road, Stamford, where a mass of Christian Burial and celebration of her life will be held at 10:30 AM. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, Darien.
