Maria Pelli
September 30, 1932 — July 21, 2018
Maria Raffaella Pelli, 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, July 21, 2018. She was born on September 30, 1932, in Arena, Italy, daughter of the late Pasquale and Maria Antonia Poerio Inzitari.
Maria was 17 years old when she and her mother arrived in the United States, where she met her father. They eventually settled on the West Side of Stamford where she fell in love with her husband Tony. They were married in 1956 in Sacred Heart Church.
Maria and Tony raised their four children in Stamford and after her husband's untimely dearh, Maria was both mother and a father to her family and beloved Nonni to her ten grandchildren.
An accomplished seamstress and a marvelous cook, Maria expressed her love for her family through the wonderful meals she always prepared for them. Maria was a woman of strength, courage and deep faith. Her smile would light up a room and she sought to bring peace wherever she went. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her and loved her.
Maria is survived by her children, sons, Frank Pelli and his wife Joan of Georgia, and Pat Pelli of Stamford. Her daughters Rita Scalero and her husband Tom of Stamford, and Ann Lasalandra and her husband Frank also of Stamford. Maria is also survived by her 10 cherished grandchildren, Tony, Maggie, Matthew, and Patric Pelli, Jenna, Tommy, Marissa, and Rae Scalero, Alyssa Aziz and her fiancé Andrew Colby, and Jessica Lasalandra. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and godchildren in Italy, Australia and in Connecticut.
Besides her parents Maria was predeceased by her beloved husband Anthony Pelli and a sister Rachele Sorbara.
The family would like to express their gratitude to all the doctors, nurses, therapists and staff members at the Stamford Hospital who tended to Maria's needs in her final days. Additionally, many thanks are to Maria's caretakers, Kinsta Bouilly and Rose Tarzia, who were of great comfort and assistance to her.
Family and friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 from 4:00PM to 8:00PM. A funeral procession will be leaving the funeral home on Thursday, July 26, 2018 at 10:00AM and proceeding to Sacred Heart RC Church, Schuyler Ave., Stamford, for a Mass of Christian Burial which will celebrated at 10:30AM. Interment will follow at St. John’s RC Cemetery, Darien.
