Mario Smeriglio, 90, formerly of Stamford, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2025. Mario was born on November 8, 1934, in Rose, Italy, to the late Michael and Giuseppina Smeriglio.
Mario found his greatest joy in spending time with his friends and loved ones, especially his grandchildren. A meticulous painting contractor, he took immense pride in his work and was known for his strong work ethic and attention to detail.
He had a zest for life and a sense of humor that made him unforgettable. He was often known as the jokester of the group, bringing smiles to everyone around him. He was a member of the Son's of Italy for over 50 years. Mario enjoyed the thrill of Jai Alai, horse and dog racing, and never passed up a chance at the lottery or a good poker game. He loved a good party and, more often than not, was the one in charge of arranging entertainment—earning him the unofficial title of “stag party coordinator.”
He was rarely seen without a smile and was known for his easygoing nature. Mario lived life on his own terms—independently, joyfully, and always with a twinkle in his eye. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love, and unforgettable memories.
Mario is survived by his two sons, Frank Smeriglio and his wife, Marilyn, of Goshen, NY, and Mark Smeriglio and his wife, Debbie, of Norwalk; his brother, Louis Smeriglio, and his wife, Jean, of Norwalk; and his sister, Yolanda Smeriglio, of Stamford; his loving grandchildren—Rylee, Jenna, Sara, Alyssa, Analisa, and Andres. He is also survived by his significant other, Nancy Figlar, of Bridgeport, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Mario was predeceased by his brothers, Francesco, Joseph, and Tony (Antonio) Smeriglio, and his sisters, Ida Sena and Connie (Concetta) Morabito.
Family and friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT, on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with a service to take place at 12:30 p.m. Interment will be private.
In honor of Mario’s joyful spirit, he requested that his wake not be a somber occasion and that those attending can wear colors—especially red, his favorite.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mario’s memory to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, VA 22116, or online at https://diabetes.org/ways-to-contribute.
