Mario Salvatore Valeriano Carpanzano, 88, a longtime resident of Stamford, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 1, 2017 with his family by his side Mario was born in San Fili, Cosenza, Italy on April 14, 1929, son of the late Michele and Francesca Gentile Carpanzano.
Mario immigrated to the U.S in April of 1951, settling in Stamford. In April of 1952, he married his beloved wife, Rosa Sciarretta Carpanzano. He was a self-employed landscaper, mason, and building contractor. Mario was a member of the Minturnese Social Club and past treasurer. He was a champion bocce player for over forty years, receiving multiple awards. He taught his children and grandchildren the finer points of making wine and Calabrese soppresata. Mario was an avid Yankee fan.
Mario is survived by his son Michael and wife JoAnne Carpanzano, grandson Captain Mario V. and wife Major Josephine Quijano-Carpanzano, United States Army, great grandchildren, Canio and Fia, granddaughter, Michelle Carpanzano and husband, Dave Engler.
Daughter, Fran and husband Teddy “Terry” Phillips, granddaughter, Josie Phillips and Michael Shook, grandson, Peter Phillips and Nicole DeFosche.
Daughter, Maria Carpanzano-Stebbins, granddaughter, Rosa and husband Nigel Fernandes, great granddaughter, Isabella, and grandson, Joseph and wife Samantha Kyek.
He is also survived by several nieces and nephews in the U.S. and Italy.
Besides his parents and wife, Mario is predeceased by his son-in-law, Richard M. Stebbins, sisters Marietta Palermo, Elvira Palermo and Amelia Carpanzano. He was also predeceased by two nephews.
Family and friends may call on the morning of Tuesday, June 6, 2017 from 9:00am to 10:30am at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford, CT, a procession will follow to St. Mary’s RC Church, 566 Elm St., Stamford where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am. Entombment will follow at the St. Mary’s Cemetery Mausoleum, Greenwich.
