Martha Hancock Downey

Martha Hancock Downey, 87, died following a long illness on May 3, 2008. She was the wife of the late Edward C. Downey of Stamford, CT.
Born in Louisville, Kentucky on March 12, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Judge Joseph and Matilda Hancock of Louisville.
Surviving her are two loving daughters, Ellen Downey and Deborah Downey Schmidt; her son-in-law, Kenneth Schmidt; and four grandchildren, Kenneth, Christopher, Scott and Ryan Schmidt. Two sisters, Marie Bauer and Shirley Doyle both of Louisville, Kentucky; and two brothers, Lloyd Hancock of Lexington, Kentucky; and Kenneth Hancock of Louisville, Kentucky also survive her.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by four brothers and one sister.
She was well known for her tremendous kindness and caring, her selfless generosity of spirit, and most of all her quick wit and sense of humor. She will be sorely missed by all who deeply loved her and now live in her shadow.
Friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, on Thursday, May 8 from 6-8 PM. A funeral procession will be leaving the funeral home at 11:20 AM on Friday, May 9 and proceed to Church of St. Cecilia, 1184 Newfield Avenue, Stamford, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon. Interment will follow at St. Johns Cemetery in Darien.
