Martin F. Armstrong III, 76 died peacefully with his daughter holding his hand at Yale Hospital in New Haven CT on Saturday September 13th.
Martin was known by most as Marty. He was the oldest of seven children born to Martin F. Armstrong Jr. and April Oursler Armstrong. He was born in New York City, and his family moved to Stamford in 1955. Marty moved to Bridgeport, CT in 1991 where he established himself in the community.
He is survived by his brothers - Michael (Plano, TX), Fulton (Arlington, VA), C.Kevin (Cincinnati, OH), Paul (Palermo, ME), and sister Clare (Smyrna, NY). His sister Catherine predeceased him. Marty has one daughter, Jennifer (Armstrong) Lupinacci, husband Tom and three granddaughters, Elizabeth, Abigail and Charlotte all of Stamford, CT. He also has several nieces and nephews. Marty had opened his heart and life to Nina Hawkins and her two sons Gavin and Kaedyn of Evansville, IN.
Marty attended parochial (St. Cecilia’s) and public school (Dolan Junior High School) in Stamford, and graduated from high school at St. Thomas More School, in Oakdale, CT. He received his Bachelor’s degree in English from Sacred Heart University.
Marty distinguished himself for the excellent customer service that he provided in several businesses, including Parkway Getty gas station in Norwalk CT and Armstrong Insurance and Armstrong Property Management firm in Bridgeport. For many years, he wrote a popular column on fishing for the Stamford Advocate. He also was a professional driver from Stamford Taxi back in the 80s to Airport runs until 2022.
He had a special love of fishing and animals. When he was younger he had wanted to be a veterinarian. He had worked as a vet tech at an animal hospital as a teenager. Life took other paths but he still worked with different environmental groups and run fishing derby days and animal education programs for children.
Marty was very proud of his near 19 years of sobriety. His AA family meant the world to him. They supported him right up until the end of his life and will not be forgotten.
