Mary O’Sullivan Alipranti of Stamford, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2010, one day short of her 94th birthday.

Born February 24, 1916 in Norwalk CT, she was the daughter of the late Daniel F. and Elizabeth McGowan O’Sullivan.

She is survived by her four daughters, Elizabeth Mercede of Stamford, Marie Alipranti and her husband Edward Havens, Jr. of South Windsor CT, Christine Iverson and her husband Stephen, of Lebanon OR, and JoAnn Amundsen and her husband Ed, of Stamford. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Kathryn & RJ Mercede, Brooke and Tyler Havens, Sarah Carver and her husband Jacob, and John Franks, and Joseph Donnelly and three great-grandchildren, Stephen Iverson, Syrus Franks and Natalie Ann Donnelly.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Joseph A. Alipranti and her siblings, Francis, William, and Elizabeth O’Sullivan.

Mrs. Alipranti was an outstanding basketball player at Norwalk High School and graduated at the age of 16. Upon graduation, she worked for the Hat Company in Norwalk CT, and the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad before marrying and moving to Stamford. After raising her four daughters, she worked part-time for Brock Press Printing in Stamford and has always volunteered at various organizations in town.

She enjoyed fishing with her husband when he was alive and gardening when she owned her own home. She traveled to various cities throughout the country for bowling tournaments and was a member of several bowling teams in the area, bowling twice a week up until two years ago. She also enjoyed sewing, crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. She was active in the St. Gabriel’s Senior Group, the St. Mary’s parish activities and various other organizations and played cards every Friday afternoon with long-time friends. Mary was known best for her baking skills – especially the Hungarian pastry she made at Christmastime.

A Funeral Procession will be leaving the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, on Friday, February 26, 2010 at 9:20a.m. for a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 566 Elm Street, Stamford. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery in Darien. Calling hours will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 25, 2010 at the Funeral Home.
